Lee Hall Depot
Lee Hall Depot was constructed in 1881 as part of the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad's efforts to establish its Atlantic terminus in Newport News, thereby linking the Ohio River valley with the sea. Named for the stately Italianate residence of Richard Decatur Lee, it was one of several facilities built during the railroad's expansion into Warwick County. The first passenger train from Newport News, which had been recently off-loaded at the fledgling port, took local residents and national officials to the Cornwallis Surrender Centennial Celebration on October 19, 1881, on a temporary track laid from Lee Hall to Yorktown. The station has continued in service since that time. © 2001-2005 The Virginia War Museum. All rights reserved.
